Editorial Review for Chaffee Zoological Gardens of Fresno – by Barbara E. Hernandez
The Experience
Beginning as the lowly Fresno Zoo, the Chaffee Zoological Gardens, named after the zoo's late director, Dr. Paul Chaffee, is now 18 acres of wild animal habitat with more than 500 exhibits of both land-dwelling and aquatic animals.
The Best
A great accomplishment for the zoo, the Asian elephant breeding center is one of only a few in North America. Chaffee bought its first elephant, Nosey, with the help of penny donations from schoolchildren.
The Rest
Grizzly bears, zebras, and giraffes are some of the park's larger, more dramatic inhabitants. Chaffee boasts a reptile house, rain forest simulation, and many bird exhibits, including performances like the "Winged Wonders Bird Show" as well as a seminar on reptiles.
